One way people have found success in managing their money is to treat personal income the same way you would your business finances. Below are five ways to help you become more engaged in your personal finances:

Track expenses. Doing so holds you more accountable for your purchases. Don’t do it to judge yourself, but instead do it to create an accurate snapshot of your spending habits.

Build a budget. After a few months of accurate expense tracking, you should have enough information to build a budget. Keep it simple – break it down based on needs, wants and savings.

Practice conscious spending. Pay closer attention to where your money goes. You can still purchase the things you want, but become more disciplined in cutting costs on things that don’t matter.

Turn a profit. In a business, if you spend more than you make you can’t turn a profit. The same idea can be applied to a household. If you’re spending more than you’re making, it’s going to be very hard to save anything.

Know your worth. Individuals can use financial statements the same way businesses do. There is software available that makes it very easy to track your spending and generate these types of statements.
