The immigration overhaul bill is headed to the full Senate next month after receiving a vote of 13 to 5 in the Senate Judiciary Committee. If passed, the bill would create a pathway to citizenship for nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants currently in the United States. City officials argue that our current immigration system hurts our local cities and governments because we don’t have a good policy in place for integrating immigrants into our communities. The new legislation will approve funds for new border security, increase workplace enforcement and set up several new categories for legal immigration.
