In Celebration of Juneteenth

by | Jun 19, 2021 | #DiversityandInclusion

Bowman is proud to celebrate Juneteenth and honor the history of June 19th, 1865. Juneteenth is a day of reflection and pride that commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States.

On this day in 1865, a Union General rode into Galveston, Texas and informed those who were enslaved that the Civil War had ended. At the time, around 250,000 enslaved people resided in Texas. They had not been informed of their freedom, as granted by the Emancipation Proclamation signed into law two and a half years earlier in 1863.

Today, Juneteenth is revered as a day of pride, celebration, and reflection on the African American plight. As the great Coretta Scott King once said, “struggle is a never-ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.” While the journey to equality is ongoing, 2021 marks a milestone as Juneteenth has become a Federal holiday.
