In 2014, nearly 35% of contracts with the Department of Homeland Security were held by small businesses. 1,800 of the 9,400 small businesses working with DHS were contracting with the agency for the first time. Here are a few tips to help your small business earn your first contract with DHS, or any other agency.

  • Do Your Homework – Research the potential client and take advantage of the wealth of information provided online.
  • Know Your Contract Vehicles – Ensure that you know the difference between different contract vehicles.
  • Participate in Networking – Many business opportunities are borne out of relationships. Participate in networking opportunities, from conferences to information email chains.
  • Understand Facets of Teaming – Keep your mind open to any combination of teaming with other organizations, from formal joint ventures to mentor-protégé relationships.
